Chinchilla For PLN In Latest Poll
The latest public opinion poll by CID-Gallup
shows that almost two thirds of Costa Ricans
are ready for a woman president. The poll
was taken in advance of the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN) convention to
choose a leader for the 2010 presidential
elections.
The poll shows that 69% made it clear that
they are ready for a woman to lead the
country. That number increases slightly to
70% among those polled with a secondary or
higher education and drops ot 65% for those
with only a primary education.
The poll shows that although Costa Ricans
are ready for a woman president, those
polled would choose Johnny Araya (former
mayor of San Jose) over Laura Chinchilla
(former vice-president), if the convention
were held today.
However, if the PLN were to hold its
convention, 50% said they would vote for
Johnny, while only 43% would vote for Laura.
Araya increased his standing in the polls by
6 points since January, when he received
only a 44% approval rate, while Chinchilla
has dropped 3 points, when she saw a 46%
approval rate in January.
Fernando Berrocal, the former security
minister, has held strong at 1% approval,
which means he is practically out of the
race.
The fourth contender for the PLN leadership,
Carlos Francisco Echeverría, bowed out of
the race the day before the closing of the
registration and was not counted in the
poll.
The CID-Gallup poll indicates that Araya has
the popular support of those with a lower
education level and over 50 years of age,
while Chinchilla is strong in the Gran Área
Metropolitana (San Jose) and women.
