Havana - Cuban former
leader Fidel Castro rejected the allegation
that Cuba would return to the Organization
of American States (OAS), local press
reported on Wednesday.
Castro said in an article entitled "Does the
OAS have the right to exist?" that this
organization "has a history with all the
trash of betrayal to Latin American peoples
since the 1960s."
Cuba was shut out of the OAS in 1962 during
the Cold War when the United States imposed
pressure on the organization in an attempt
to overthrow the socialist government of
Cuba and isolate it.
"We will not knee before the OAS to return
to that institution," said Castro .
He added that the OAS general secretary Jose
Miguel Insulza "knows that we do not even
want to hear the vile name of that
institution."
Castro said that the OAS "has not done a
single service to our people."
The OAS is scheduled to hold the fifth
Summit of the Americas from April 17 to
April 19 in Puerto Espana, Trinidad and
Tobago.
Castro said the summit "will be a battle
field where many governments will be in
embarrassing situation."
Latin American presidents have said that
they will demand the return of Cuba to the
OAS and the end of the U.S. economic embargo
against Cuba in the summit.
According to Cuba, the U.S. blockade is
"genocide" and it has cost at least 93
billion U.S. dollars since 1962.
