FARC Appeals To
Summit of Americas For
Peace in Colombia
Bogota - The
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
Wednesday appealed to countries attending
the Summit of the Americas for a peace
process including a humanitarian exchange in
Colombia.
According to a statement, FARC was worried
about the consequences of decades of armed
conflict in Colombia.
"We hope the Summit could contribute to the
settlement of the conflict through a
civilized way, reach a humanitarian
agreement to make the exchange of war
prisoners possible and make efforts to
protect the civilians from the effects of
the military confrontations," FARC said in
the statement.
FARC also called for a solution to the U.S.
embargo against Cuba.
Former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria
said on Wednesday that "I prefer to talk
first about the humanitarian exchange with
the FARC and try to solve the problem of the
kidnapping."
Colombian people hope the peace process with
FARC can finish a conflict of decades that
left thousands displaced.
The 5th Summit of the Americas will be held
on April 17 to 19 at the Caribbean island
nation of Trinidad and Tobago.
