ICE Promotes "Prepago" - Prepaid Cellular Service

The Institutio Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) - the state telecom and only cellular service provider in Costa Rica - has been promoting its "Prepago!" mobile services that will allow customers to purchase a cellular line without a contract or commitment and in set amounts, which can be recharged over the internet.

But, there is a catch. ICE doesn't have the lines to fill the order. And in ICE tradition, it is taking reservations when there are lines available.

The Prepago! brings ICE in line with other countries where prepaid cellular service is common, where customers walk in to a communications centre, purchase a set amount of prepaid service, install the SIM chip in their mobile telephone and are set to make and receive calls.

The service is very useful to visitors of a country or to those who want to keep their cellular telephone costs in check.

The prepaid service has eluded Costa Rica.

And it will continue to do for visitors and foreigners, as ICE still requires customers to be either nationals or residents.

In addition, customers are required to bring in their telephone equipment to an ICE agency to sign up for the service and provide a recent utility bill. The only difference from the subscription to ICE's regular cellular service, is the elimination of the ¢12.500 colones deposit.

ICE says this is a "pilot" program and the cost of the prepaid service ranges from ¢2.500 to ¢10.000 colones.
