Cruz Roja Ready To Tackle Emergencies; 16
Deaths Recorded So Far This Semana Santa
Using modern telecommunications equipment
and the internet, the Cruz Roja
Costarricense (Costa Rican Red Cross) has
set up 107 command posts around the country
providing assistance to vacationers during
Semana Santa.
Cruz Roja officials said that, even though
there is a concerted effort to provide
assistance in for those in need at the beach
and mountain areas during Semana Santa, the
"Benemérita" is not letting its guard down
on the Gran Área Metropolitana (San José).
The intense operation began on Wednesday
with command posts at the beach and mountain
areas, as well as near lake and rivers
frequented by Semana Santa vacationers and
will continue until Sunday.
There are also command posts along the
country's busiest highways, providing
immediate response in the event of an
emergency.
On hand are 630 "cruzrojistas" (red cross
workers) with 120 ambulances and eight boats
to deal with any emergency, that can include
search and rescue efforts in the water and
mountains.
Unfortunately, notwithstanding the efforts
of the Cruz Roja, this Semana Santa has
recorded 16 violent deaths between Saturday
and Wednesday afternoon.
The majority of the violent deaths occurred
in San José, the majority resulting from
inter family aggressions, followed by water
accidents.
The Cruz Roja said that thanks to their
immediate response at least 13 lives have
been saved.
Using the wireless internet service known as
Wimax, provided by the Radiográfica
Costarricense (RACSA), it enables the Cruz
Roja to keeps its mobile units in contact
with each other and the operations centre,
providing instant communications from the
emergency site.
