Cuban Leader Meets U.S.
Lawmakers
Havana - Cuban President
Raul Castro met here Monday with a
delegation of U.S. lawmakers, his first such
direct contact since he replaced his elder
brother as the country's new top leader last
year.
Castro appeared at the meeting in a business
suit, which is unusually worn by him,
according to state television footage.
Six out of the seven visiting U.S. lawmakers
led by Barbara Lee, a Democratic
Representative from California, attended the
closed-door discussion, whose details were
undisclosed.
The U.S. delegation arrived in Havana on
Friday for a scheduled six-day visit, which
is widely regarded as a signal of
normalization of ties between the two long
confronted countries.
The U.S. lawmakers have met with Cuban
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and Cuban
parliament President Ricardo Alarcon, and
visited some churches, genetic engineering
facilities and pharmaceutical complex.
The delegation expressed at different
occasions the U.S. side's willingness to
improve the bilateral relations.
