Guatemalans Demand Anti-Crisis Steps
Guatemala - Farmers,
indigenous, union members and
representatives of other sectors marched in
Guatemala City on Tuesday demanding measures
to face violence and the high cost of
living, among other things.
The demonstration was attended by nearly
20,000 people, who went to the Congress of
the Republic and the Constitution Square.
We took the streets peacefully to demand
from government the granting of lands and
housing subsidies, leader of Unidad de
Accion Sindical y Popular union (UASP),
Ruben Mazariegos, told Prensa Latina.
In view of the difficult situation triggered
by the global crisis, the demonstrators also
demanded support to small grain producers
and a reduction in prices of the family
basket and the power service.
The march made a stop outside the US Embassy
to condemn anti-immigrant raids and
deportations.
The demonstrators presented their list of
demands to the Executive, Legislative and
Judicial powers.
