Russia To Help Venezuela
Build Nuclear Reactor
CARACAS - Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez
expressed readiness
Sunday to accept
Russia's offer to help
develop his country's
nuclear energy program
for peaceful purposes.
The remark was made at a
local electoral
assembly. He said
Venezuela is to accept
Prime Minister Vladimir
Putin's offer last week
to help build a nuclear
reactor. The two
countries have set up a
special committee to
work out a detailed
cooperative plan, he
added.
Chavez underscored the
peaceful purpose of
Venezuela's nuclear
energy development.
While its last plan to
peacefully develop
nuclear power in the
1950s failed due to U.S.
obstruction, this
Russia-aided plan will
mainly cover the sectors
of medicine and
electricity generation,
according to Chavez.
Chavez arrived in Moscow
on Sept. 25 for a
two-day visit, during
which he had talks with
Putin on cooperation in
various fields,
including energy,
manufacturing, the oil
industry and military.
