Social Tensions Heat up
in Peru
LIMA - Social
tensions in Peru are
aggravating, with
several sectors
rejecting President Alan
Garcia's attacks against
the main trade union,
the Amazonian indigenous
movement and striking
doctors.
The presidential
statements have been
also rebuffed by the
doctors, on strike for
nine days, as well as
social organizations in
the southern region, who
are organizing a strike
in their territories.
The confrontation is in
line with the
organization of a
national protest on
October 7 by the
Political and Social
Coordinating Office,
several organizations,
and movements of
Amazonian indigenous.
The vice president of
the General
Confederation of
Workers, Olmedo Auris,
announced the union will
also leave the National
Labor Council, a
conciliatory mechanism
made up by the State and
businesspeople.
Auris said the decision
responds to the
council's failure to
approve a new labor law
replacing the neoliberal
one in force.
He added that on October
7, they will also
protest the rise in
prices and the
governmental economic
policy, and demand a
wage increase.
