Finance Minister
Expected To Step Down
The Ministro de Hacienda
(Finance Minister),
Guillermo Zúñiga, will
soon be stepping down
from his post, not for
accusations of
corruption, as has
befallen several other
fellow ministers, but
rather to run for
president in the 2010
elections.
Zúñiga is expected to
enter the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN)
nomination race to lead
the part in the 2010
presidential elections,
facing tough competition
from former Ministro de
Seguridad, Fernando
Berrocal and San José
mayor, Johnny Araya.
Expected to enter the
race, though she has yet
to make a formal
announcement, is
vice-president Laura
Chinchilla.
Zúñiga said that he
accepted the suggestion
by Costa Rican presidet
Oscar Arias to run for
the nomination. However,
Arias denied any such
suggestion made to his
Finance minister.
"I have never spoken to
don Guillermo of any
candidature. We always
speak on work related
subjects", said Arias
while in Puntarenas
celebrating the port
town's 150th
anniversary.
Arias added that for
sure some mutual friend
or other party member
may have spoken to
Zúñiga about running and
he accepted.
Chinchilla has been the
favourite of Arias to
lead the party in 2010.
However, the Tribunal
Supremo de Elecciones
(TSE) scolded the
president for making
remarks on the
Chinchilla candidacy and
has since kept a low
profile on the issue.
Zúñiga has been a long
time ally of Arias,
heading the vice-ministro
de Hacienda post during
the first Arias
administration and
minister during the
current Arias term.
