Plus 91 Gasoline
Replacing Super Now On
Sale
The new "Plus 91"
gasoline began selling
yesterday at all
gasoline pumps around
the country and is
expected to save the
state refinery some ¢300
million colones a month
as drivers switch to the
higher octane regular
from super.
The Refinadora
Costarricense de
Petróleo (Recope) says
that 90% of the
country's vehicular
fleet (1.042.154
vehicles) can use the
higher octane regular
gasoline, as a
substitute for super.
Pluys 91 is being sold
at ¢721 colones per
litre - the same price
of regular gasoline -
while a litre of super
costs ¢736 colones.
Jorge Rojas, Gerente de
Distribución y Ventas de
Recope, explained that
Plus 91 has same energy
content as super and
adheres to all quality
specifications.
"All the vehicles that
currently use regular
can use Plus 91, the
difference is that is 3
octane higher, which is
an additional benefit
for users of regular
gasoline, however, all
those vehicles who
required at least 90
octane fuel, can use
Plus 91", said Rojas.
Rojas explained that in
actuality Plus 91 and
regular are the same
gasoline, Plus 91 in
effect replacing
regular.
In addition to the lower
price, another benefit
of Plus 91 is the
elimination of Carbon
monoxide from the
environment.
The change is welcomed
with approval by the
Asociación Costarricense
de Expendedores de
Combustible and
according to José Miguel
Masís, executive
director of the
Asociación, the products
needs to be promoted so
that Costa Ricans
understand the benefits
to make the change and
obtain better vehicle
performance.
Rojas said that
promotional material for
the product will soon be
all gasoline stations,
which will allow "pisteros"
(gasoline station
attendants) to explain
the benefits to their
customers. There are no
self serve gasoline
stations in Costa Rica.
Recope expects that 90%
of all vehicles will be
using Plus 91 by the end
of the year and only 10%
continue to use super.
