 Supreme Court Upholds Right Of Journalists To Protect Sources
 Reporters Without Borders hails yesterday’s Costa Rican supreme court decision upholding the right of journalists to protect the identity of their sources.

The court took this position when it ruled in favour of the daily newspaper La Nación in the action brought against it by former President Miguel Angel Rodríguez, who wanted to know its sources for a report that  forced him to step down as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

La Nación claimed that Rodríguez received kickbacks from the French telecommunications company Alcatel in the award of a major contract with the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).

In its ruling, the supreme court said: “Journalists have enjoyment of the fundamental right to maintain the confidentiality of sources, which stems from the general right to information.”

Reporters Without Borders commented: “This decision will set a legal precedent and as such represents a major advance for press freedom.”
