"Hanna" Affected 5.000
in Costa Rica
Some 5.000 people have
been directly affected
by tropical storm Hanna
in the province of
Guanacaste and
Puntarenas, as Hanna
indirectly influenced
the flooding in various
areas of the provinces.
The Cruz Roja
Costarricense (Costa
Rican Red Cross) has
been busy at work
providing relief to the
affected since
Wednesday, working
together with the
Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) -
national emergency
commission - providing
shelter and rescue
efforts to those
affected the worst.
The Centro de
Operaciones en
Emergencias de la Cruz
Roja reports operating
21 shelters and in some
cases have had to use
boats to get to the
affected, like in the
communities of Bolsón
and Ortega.
"Fortunately we have not
had any fatalities",
said Guillermo Arroyo,
Director Nacional de
Operaciones de la Cruz
Roja.
Strong winds and heavy
rains have been normal
in all Guanacaste during
the last couple of days,
especially in the low
lying areas of
Filadelfia and coastal
communities.
Yesterday afternoon area
residents were concerned
about the high levels of
the Tempisque river,
with fears of the river
overflowing its banks,
that would have affected
low lying areas of
Liberia and beach
communities of Playas
del Coco, Hermosa,
Panama and Ocotla.
In Puntarenas, the area
of Miramar has been the
hardest hit where some
80 families of the San
Martín Norte and Sur
communities have been
isolated following a
landslide at the Cerro
Arancibia.
Miguel Carmona,
president of the Cruz
Roja Costarricense said
that rescue and relief
efforts would continue
into the weekend even
though the rains have
subsided.
