Ibero-American Summit
Set To Begin In El
Salvador
SAN SALVADOR - Foreign
ministers of the 22
countries due to
participate in the 18th
Ibero-American Summit
met Wednesday to
complete the draft of
the so-called
"Compromise of San
Salvador" to be signed
at the summit, according
to news reaching here
from San Salvador, the
capital of El Salvador.
Some 20 heads of state
and government will
attend the summit themed
on 'Youth and
Development', focusing
on the future of some
150,000 young people in
the region.
"I want to invite you to
be part of the new
history that is begging
to be written today for
Ibero-American youth,
and to transcend from
word to action," said
Salvadoran Foreign
Minister Marisol
Arugueto.
"To invest in youngsters
is not only for our
future, but also for our
present."
The minister added that
it is necessary to
"centralize our efforts
on better education,
employment and
eradication of youth
violence".
Leaders from Latin
America, Spain and
Portugal attending the
summit will also be
prepared to tackle the
impact of the world
economic crisis.
Issues like
drug-trafficking and
cross-border crime,
considered common
problems for Latin
American countries, will
also be discussed at the
meet.
