Evo Morales:
Constitution Boosts
National Unity

President Evo Morales
who turns 49 today,
affirmed that the best
present on his birthday
is the new Constitution
to consolidate national
unity.
According to the
President, the great
charter to be submitted
to popular referendum
next January 25, allows
for department
autonomies.
These autonomies have a
solidarity nature and
benefit all Bolivians,
without exception, they
are not meant for small
families and sects
pretending to keep
accumulating wealth, he
stressed.
Morales criticized civic
leaders and opposing
prefects of the regions
of Pando, Beni, Santa
Cruz and Tarija, who
last May and June
approved autonomic
statutes in an illegal
manner.
He lamented that
regional governors
attempted to divide the
country through the
introduction of these
statutes.
In a ceremony for the
delivery of ambulantes
to the eastern locality
of Montero, the head of
State highlighted that
the conquest of the new
Constitution is due to
the social movements and
their struggle.
On this issue, he put
the example of last
October 13 march for the
refoundation of Bolivia,
organized by the
Coordinadora para el
Cambio and marched for
120 miles to the city of
La Paz to demand
Congress to approve the
law convoking to that
consultation.
Morales also took part
the eve in the closing
of an International
Solidarity with Bolivia
meeting, where over
1,500 delegates
representing 18
countries agreed to
propose Morales for the
Nobel Peace Award 2008.
On that issue, they
highlighted Morales is a
symbol of the
aspirations of a people
historically
marginalized of Latin
America and attending to
his constant actions on
the need to live in
harmony with the
Pachamama (Mother
Earth).
They also emphasized his
will to solve peacefully
the conflicts and the
struggle in defense of
the culture of
indigenous people.
