Imported Chinese Workers
Will Be Building New
National Stadium Donated
by China
The new Estadio Nacional
(National Stadium) will
be literally built by
the Chinese, as 200
Chinese constructions
workers are expected to
arrive in Costa Rica
next month to erect the
new structure in the
Parque La Sabana.
The construction of the
new stadium is not only
possible by a donation
of us$72 million dollars
by the Chinese
government, but will
also employe Chinese
workers.
Osvaldo Pandolfo,
presidente del Instituto
Costarricense del
Deporte y la Recreación
(Icoder), explained that
the foreign workers will
be housed near the
construction site, the
exact location has yet
to be determined, so
that work can continue
around the clock.
The work on the stadium
is expected to last some
18 months, the new
stadium to be ready by
the middle of 2010.
According to Pandolfo,
the yet unnamed Chinese
construction company,
will be importing
prefabricated housing
for the workers, as food
and machinery.
As far as permits for
the housing for the
workers, the mayor of
San José, Johnny Araya,
said that the
municipality is willing
to provide the required
permits.
To alleviate traffic
congestion that will be
caused by the new
stadium, the Consejo
Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi)
will be expanding the
road south of the park,
between the MAG and the
universal, to four lanes
from the current two and
according to Alejandro
Molina, director of
Conavi, the expanded
road will be ready in
time for the stadium
opening.
