Women In San José
Protest Against Ortega
A group of Costa Rican
women protested in front
of the Nicaraguan
embassy in San José
against that country's
president, Daniel
Ortega, who is accused
of persecuting feminist
organizations.
With placards reading
"Alto a la persecución
de feministas en
Nicaragua" (stop the
persecution of feminists
in Nicaragua) and
"Ortega Dictator", the
protesters - members of
eight women's groups in
Costa Rica - asked to
speak to embassy
officials to deliver
their petition.
However, the embassy
closed its doors to the
women, ignoring
completely their
request.
The head of the Partido
Nueva Liga Feminista,
Ana Ruiz, explained that
the protest was an act
of solidarity of
feminist organizations
in Nicaragua, that have
been subjected to
persecution by the
government of Ortega by
empathizing with the
president's
stepdaughter,
Zoilamérica Narvaez.
Narvaez, daughter of
Ortega's wife, Rosario
Murillo, assures that
she was a victim of
sexual abuse by her
stepfather during her
adolescent years.
Recently, Nicaraguan
Judicial officials
launched investigations
into dozens of no
governmental
organization for alleged
irregularities in their
financial practices.
