First Cruise Ship Of The
Season Docks At Limón
The cruise liner season
opened in Limón
yesterday with the
arrival of the first
cruise ship to the
Caribbean port.
The Coral Princess is
the first of the
expected 125 cruise
ships this season, with
its 1.900 passengers.
Port authorities expect
some 230.000 tourists to
visit Limón during the
2009 season, up from the
182.000 last year.
Cruise ship tourists
often visit area parks,
forests, beaches and
tour the city of Limón,
taking in the
Afro-Caribbean culture
of the area.
Limón receives the
largest volume of cruise
ships during the cruise
ship season, the Pacific
ports of Puntarenas and
Caldera, where the
cruise ship season began
a couple weeks back,
receives a total of
about 80 cruise ships a
season.
To ensure safety for the
visitors, the Fuerza
Pública (police) has
reinforced patrols and
manpower in the area and
will be providing tight
security near the docks
and places of interest
in their attempt to
"prevent" attacks
against foreigners,
according to Seguridad
vice-minister, José
Torres.
Erick Crooks, is the
local Fuerza Pública
commander, to confirmed
that his officials will
be working in pairs and
patrolling areas like
playa Bonita (the
closest beach) and the
cruiseship terminal.
Crooks added that a
detachment of the "Policía
Turística" (a
specialized tourist
police unit) will be
also patrolling the
area, using quadracycles
and motorcycles, between
Moín, Liverpool and
Bananito.
Notwithstanding the
tight security being
promises, officials of
Japdeva, confirmed the
assault on one of the
Coral Princess tourists,
occurring in Playa
Bonita. During the
assault, the tourist
lost her purse that
contained cash and a
camera.
