Continental Agricultural
Meeting
Managua - With the
purpose to create a
common platform to face
neoliberal policies and
free trade agreements,
the First Continental
Meeting for Agricultural
and Food Workers is in
session in this capital.
“We want to build a
programmatic platform
taking the progressive
spaces being generated
in the region with the
triumph of leftwing
governments, said
Organizing Committee
member Freddy Franco to
Prensa Latina.
According to Franco,
also coordinator of the
National Workers Front
this is the moment to
make the transformations
the sector needs and
defend the security and
sovereignty of the
peoples of the region.
Franco said that
Nicaragua was chosen as
host of this event in
recognition to its
efforts to generate a
greater productive
capacity, associated to
a better distribution of
richness.
The event counts on the
support of the World
Union Federation which
secretary for America,
Ramon Cardona, told
Prensa Latina that the
agricultural sector
acquires a vital
significance in moments
in which the world is
living an unparalleled
food crisis.
Cardona eulogized the
Nicaraguan government's
efforts to facilitate
the poor a bigger access
to feeding.
Representing Cuba, there
is Blas Berrier,
secretary general of the
National Union of
Agricultural and Forest
Workers, who will give a
lecture on the
production of
agricultural fuels and
its disastrous
consequences Saturday.
Representatives of 25
organizations from 12
countries of the
continent, under the
slogan "For a New Latin
America", will conclude
the forum in the Carlos
Fonseca Amador
University, a branch of
the National Autonomous
University of Nicaragua.
