Floods Create Complex
Situation in Panama
Panama - Damages in road
infrastructure,
dwellings and
agriculture are
featuring the situation
in the Panamanian
provinces of Chiriqui
and Bocas del Toro and
the indigenous community
of Ngobe Bugle, affected
by floods in the last
days.
The Civil Protection
services said that
overflowing of rivers in
the province of Darien
was reported, with 1,800
people affected up to
now.
Meteorology experts
alerted Friday on the
existence of a low
pressure zone in Darien,
influencing on the rains
in the area and the
indigenous community of
Kuna Yala.
There is a complex
situation in Bocas del
Toro, where there is an
insufficient supply of
food and fuel because of
the difficulties to
accede by land.
The air links were
affected Thursday by the
weather conditions, but
there is information
about rehabilitation of
roads from Chiriqui for
light vehicles.
Authorities from the
local Public Works
Ministry said that a
cost of 6 million
dollars is estimated for
repairing roads, but the
cost of the total
reconstruction of the
road infrastructure
reaches 50 million.
Losses in the tourist
sector because of
cancellation of
reservations and damages
in the local agriculture
concentrated in products
like banana and coffee
are added to this.
