Lula da Silva on Tuesday
signed a new law
increasing jail time for
pedophiliac crimes as a
new measure to fight
child sexual abuse in
the South American
country.
Under the new law,
imprisonment for
pedophilia will extend
from the previous two to
six years to four to
eight years.
It will be applied to
those who produce,
photograph, record or
register sexual or
pornographic images of
both children and
adolescents, as well as
to those who recruit
children or adolescents
for such practices,
finance or profit from
them.
The new law identifies
the Internet as one of
the means to disseminate
pornographic materials.
Moreover, possessing
images or videos of
child pornography, even
without trading or
sharing them, will now
be a crime in Brazil.
The signing of the law
coincided with the 3rd
World Congress against
the Sexual Exploitation
of Children and
Adolescents in Riode
Janeiro.
In a speech Tuesday,
Lula stressed the need
for sexual education at
home, saying it can help
children be more
prepared to defend
themselves against
pedophiles.
"It is necessary to
convince parents all
over the world that
sexual education at home
is as important as
food," he said.
More than 3,000
participants, including
government officials
from more than 137
nations are discussing
ways to fight child
sexual abuse at a
four-day conference. |
