List of Proposed Traffic Fines
Following is a partial list of the new fines proposed in the reforms to the Ley de Tránsito (Traffic Law) that is expected to be presented to the Legislative Assembly on Monday and voted on first reading on Wednesday, after more than two years of discussions.

In addition to the higher fines, a demerit point system will be instituted and a jail sentence for drivers who are found negligent causing death in a traffic accident.

Most of the fines for the list offences currently range between ˘2.000 and ˘20.000 colones.

Drunk driving: ˘227.000 and two year suspension of license
Not stopping at a Stop sign: ˘165.000 and 20 points
Street racing: ˘113.500 and 25 points
Talking a cellular phone while driving: ˘165.000 and 20 points
Illegal U-Turn: ˘227.000 and 10 points
Offering a bribe: ˘227.000 and 20 points
Operating a Pirate (Gypsy) taxi: ˘227.000 and 25 points
Motorcyclist without a reflective vest: ˘90.800
Driving without a license: ˘45.400
Circulating without registration: ˘45.400
Not paying a toll: ˘22.700
