"Red Alert" For Matina
And Talamanca
The Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) has
issued a "red" alert for
the areas of Matina and
Talamanca, in the Limón
province, due to the
strong rains that have
affected the entire
areas of the Atlantic
province.
At least 350 people were
already in shelters last
night and another 300 or
so decided to go to
homes of relatives as
water levels flooded
many low lying areas.
Along with the emergency
commission, the Cruz
Roja Costarricense (Red
Cross) is on full alert
in Matina and Talamanca,
as well as Sarapiquí
(Heredia) and the
Northern Zone
(Alajuela).
In Sixaola, at the
Panama border, shelters
have been set up,
however the number of
people being housed
there was not available
from the CNE. In an
attempt to warn
residents of the area,
authorities sounded a
general siren alarm,
warning of possible
flooding due to the
heavy rain the Talamanca
mountains.
The CNE is keeping a
vigilant watch on the
rivers Barbilla,
Reventazón (Siquirres),
Chirripó (Matina) and
Parismina (Guácimo) as
water levels continue to
grow.
Last night Tránsito
(traffic) officials
reported passage to
Limón from Siquirres was
closed due to the
Chirripó overflowing its
banks
