Guatemala Bus Fire "A
Mass Murder"
Guatemala - Guatemalan general
prosecutor said Monday
that the incident of 16
people found burnt dead
inside a bus in eastern
Guatemala was "a mass
murder," and not a
traffic accident as
previously believed.
Amilcar Velasquez told
reporters that "this is
not an accident... It is
a mass murder" committed
by a criminal gang on
Saturday night,
according to reports
reaching here from
Guatemala City.
The victims -- 15
Nicaraguans and one
Dutch citizen -- were
found burnt dead inside
a bus on a rural road in
the town of La Reforma
in the eastern province
of Zacapa on Sunday.
Authorities have
confirmed that the
victims were shot first
and then burnt with the
vehicle, which explained
why there were no signs
that anyone had tried to
flee.
Velasquez said the
investigation was
difficult because the
perpetrators made big
efforts to erase all
kinds of evidence.
Police spokesman Donald
Gonzalez said the
killings might be
drug-related. He said
parts of the bus were
torn away, as if someone
had tried to find secret
compartments. |
