Riots Over Election
Results in Managua
Managua - Followers of
opposition candidate to
Mayor of Managua,
Eduardo Montealegre,
staged riots in the city
on Monday, where their
main rival, Sandinista
Alexis Arguello,
proclaimed himself the
winner, according to
preliminary official
figures.
Local tv showed images
of people armed with
sticks and stones in
Zumen, southwest of
Managua, where they
attacked a public bus
and persecuted other
individuals, presumably
political rivals.
According to reports,
three people were
wounded in the incident,
while La Nueva Radio Ya
reported that citizen
Jose Esteban Sandoval
died after he was shot
in the back in that same
place.
Hundreds of followers of
Montealegre, from the
Liberal
Constitucionalista Party
(PLC), gathered outside
the PLC headquarters in
the 380 neighborhood.
There is another group
gathered near the
Supreme Electoral
Council (CSE), which is
soon expected to give
the third batch of
official preliminary
results of the elections
held Sunday in 146
Nicaraguan
municipalities.
Followers of the
governing Sandinista
National Liberation
Front (FSLN) started to
celebrate Arguello's
victory yesterday night,
when voters granted him
a preliminary victory
over Montealegre.
The Sandinistas have
also gathered in main
Managua squares "to
defend the voting".
