Legislator Expected
To Renounce Immunity To
Face Criminal Charges
For Drunk Driving Death
The legislator who
killed a pedestrian
while driving drunk said
he would present himself
before the Legislative
Assembly to that his
legislative immunity can
be lifted.
Ovidio Agüero, a
legislator for the
Movimiento Libertario
(ML) ran over Víctor
Mauricio Arroyo Cisneros
nine days ago, while
driving drunk, as
evidenced by a
breathalyzer test at the
scene of the accident.
Agüero, up to yesterday,
had refused to take
responsibility for the
death of Cisneros.
However, the president
of the Legislative
Assembly read out loud
in the chamber a letter
by Agüero who said he
will renounce his
immunity on Tuesday.
Agüero said the action
is only to face the
judicial process against
in the Tribunales del
Segundo Circuito
Judicial in the Atlantic
region. Agüero, after
renouncing his immunity,
will be charged with
homicide.
Although the action is
welcomed by many
legislators, some,
however, say it is too
little, too late,
because he put the
credibility of all
legislators in question.
Evita Arguedas, an
independent legislators,
said that she hopes the
action won't be stalled
much longer as too much
time has already passed.
Legislator Oscar López
is one that has been
very vocal and
pressuring Agüero to
take responsibility of
his actions. "In this
country we are all equal
before the law and it is
not possible that a
legislator hides behind
his immunity to avoid
justice, while the
family cries for the
death of their child",
said López, who
represents the Partido
Accesibilidad Sin
