Che Guevara in Buenos
Aires
A demonstration
accompanied a statue of
Ernesto Che Guevara in
its tour of Buenos Aires
streets on Tuesday.
The 13-feet sculpture
was made by self-taught
artist Andres Zerneri,
who said it was a result
of collective work.
It was made from bronze
keys and small objects
voluntarily donated by
people from around the
world.
"Today it is my turn to
be the visible face for
having initiated the
project, but this would
not have been possible
without the support of
many people," a visibly
moved Zerneri said.
He explained that the
idea stemmed from his
admiration for Che and
his efforts in getting
people involved in
projects.
The demonstrators,
mostly youngsters,
carried Argentinean
flags and red banners
with the image of the
guerrilla leader and his
historical phrase
"Struggle Until Victory
Forever!"
The caravan through main
Buenos Aires streets,
including famous
Corrientes Avenue, was
also a tribute to the
five anti-terrorist
Cuban fighters held in
US prisons for fighting
terrorism.
Cuban Embassy officials
in Argentina took part
in the demonstration.
On Wednesday, a farewell
ceremony will be held at
Rio de La Plata port, in
Buenos Aires. The
sculpture will be placed
in a ship bound for
Rosario (Che's
birthplace) where it
will be part of a
monument to be
inaugurated to mark his
80th birthday, on June
14.
