Fraud Artists Claim To
Be IMAS Officials
Authorities are advising
of fake calls coming
from fraud artists
claiming to be working
for the Instituto Mixto
de Ayuda Social (IMAS),
who are tying up the
lose ends of a case of a
family member who will
be receiving IMAS help
with a monthly pension.
The callers say that the
family member will be
receiving assistance of
between ˘150.000 and
˘180.000 colones per
month, however, more
personal information is
required to complete the
process.
The callers ask for
personal information,
like if their own their
own home, if they have
properties, etc. and an
appointment for a visit,
of course, if they cover
the cost of
transportation and the
lawyer handing the case.
IMAS president José
Antonio Li, said that
the IMAS does not
communicate
notifications by
telephone and the
amounts are too high for
a real IMAS grant,
leading him to believe
that the calls are being
made under false
pretences.
"It is important for
people to know of the
danger. My
recommendation is not to
give out any information
by telephone to anyone,
nor give any caller an
address", said Li.
The calls come from a
"blocked" number and to
add to the credibility
the caller identifies
themself as a Gerente
