Rioters Were Not
University Students
Although the total
amount of the damage
caused by a bunch of
hooligans on Sunday has
yet to be calculated,
between 15 and 20 local
businesses were affected
by the riot when the
hooligans were denied
entry to a concert at
the Universidad Latina
in San Pedro.
Added to the cost of the
damage will also be
damage to the university
itself, which suffered
broken windows and some
of the classrooms
vandalized. The
university was holding
the concert Fesital
Snickers Urbania, with a
closing performance by
the Los Pericos, in its
parking lot.
Local businsess owners
like Fernán Guardia, who
told Al Día that the
rioters used his
cafetería "Latin Break"
for practice and that
the only thing they
couldn't take with them
were the heavy
containers, the rest
they destroyed in a
violent rage.
Montes de Oca mayor,
Fernando Trejos, said
that although the
concert had the required
permits, the
municipality will study
the possibility of
prohibiting concerts in
Montes de Oca.
Arturo Jofré, dean of
the university, said the
damage caused by the
rioters is considerable.
Jofré said that the
concert was organized by
Snickers-Urbania and the
university only
facilitated the use of
the covered parking lot.
Jofré added that the
event was not a
university function and
as such was held on a
day when there are no
students. The majority
attending were not
university students and
that entrance was not
restricted solely to
ULatina students.
The dean said that
classes will be held as
normal today.
Trejos, for his part,
said that the event was
organized by Frontline
Events who refused to
give comments on
Sunday's riot.
Police detained 35
people, of which 13 will
possibly be facing
criminal charges,
according tot he
viceministra de
Gobernación, Ana Durán.
