Hondurans Die Young
Some 4,300 Honduran
youths have been
murdered over the past
ten years, according to
the director of the
humanitarian
organization Casa
Alianza, Manuel Capellin.
Capellin said that
white-slave trade,
emigration, sexual rapes
and domestic violence,
among other situations,
are the main causes of
those murders.
The children's human
rights advocate called
on the Honduran people
to work together to
prevent that terrible
social scourge.
He recalled that as the
problem affects a large
number of people in the
region, Honduras,
Guatemala and Nicaragua
set up the Central
American Coalition for
Prevention of Youth
Violence a year ago.
These countries are
working together to
fight that scourge,
stressed Capellin,
adding that Hondurans
have got used to daily
reports of youths
murdered in their own
communities, due to an
evident loss of values
in society.
In Honduras, under-18
citizens account for 52
percent of the
population, totaling 2.7
million people who live
on about one dollar a
day.
