Guatemala Suffers
Earthquake, No Major
Damage
An earthquake
registering 5.1 degrees
on the Richter scale
shook Guatemala on
Sunday, causing panic
but no deaths or serious
damage, according to
news reaching here.
Hugo Rodas, director of
the National Disaster
Reduction Coordination
Body (Conred in
Spanish), told media in
Guatemala that the quake
struck at 10.55 a.m.
local time and its
epicenter was 146 km
from the nation's
capital, off the Pacific
coast, at a depth of
62.3 km.
The quake is the second
to hit the country in
less than 48 hours. Last
Friday's quake
registered 5.6 degrees,
and was 122 km southeast
of the capital also in
the Pacific.
Friday's quake was felt
in the center, south,
southwest and west of
the nation.
Rodas said that no
victims or serious
damage had been reported
from either quake, but
frequent quakes mean
that Conred remains on
alert.
