Ortega Calls for Unity
on Budget Issue
Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega called on
his political
adversaries to achieve
unity at least on the
approval of the Budget
of the Republic.
On Saturday, Ortega
opened a round of talks
with the president of
the National Assembly's
Economic Committee,
Francisco Aguirre Sacasa,
of the Constitutionalist
Liberal Party, to
discuss the 2008 budget.
The global economy is
going through difficult
times and that forces
us, Nicaraguans, to be
more united to be able
to move on in social
matters, in investments
in all fields, both
public and foreign,
Ortega noted.
He acknowledged the
parliamentarian's work
to reach agreements with
different Assembly
groups, showing concern
about an issue that is
crucial for the
Nicaraguan family's
economy.
Aguirre Sacasa said the
budget issue must be
separated from party
disputes to prevent
contamination due to
political considerations
and problems.
We cannot waste our
energies in domestic and
sterile political
disputes, he stressed.
Ortega favored
strengthening dialogue,
and recalled his recent
meeting with the leader
of the Nicaraguan
Liberal Alliance,
Eduardo Montealegre.
Montealegre, who said at
the time that it was
necessary to approve the
budget, is under
investigation for
alleged corruption
during his mandate as
Finance Minister in the
