Two Inmates Part of Car
Theft Ring
It seems prison cannot
contain thieves, as two
prisoners of the La
Reforma prison, located
in Alajuela, are part of
a gang that have so far
been involved in theft
of 17 luxury vehicles
and two truck during the
last three months and
without leaving the
prison walls.
Authorities say the
group that is made of
five people, including
the 2 inmates, who place
classified ads in the
local newspapers for
lending money on
vehicles.
The classified ad for
the fast and easy loan
gives a cellular number
to call, a number that
is answered by the
inmates at the prison.
The potential victim is
asked to take the
vehicle to a shop where
they are asked to leave
the vehicle for an
evaluation to consider
the loan. When the owner
of the vehicle returns
to pick up their vehicle
and sign the loan
agreement, the shop is
closed and the vehicle
is gone.
Authorities said that
the numbers being used
by the thieves are:
354-9828, 354 5927 and
377 7051 and to be wary
when responding to an ad
or call from any of
three numbers.
