Scamsters Attempt to
Charge For Bomberos
Services
The ingenuity of
scamsters seems to have
no boundaries, as the
Cuerpo de Bomberos
(Firefighters) report
the first two cases of
an unusual fraud.
It appears that a person
or persons first
locate an empty lot,
find out who the owner
is, set fire to debris
on the lot and then call
the fire department to
put it out.
After the fire has been
put out, a call is then
placed to the owner of
the lot, who is asked to
pay a fine and costs for
putting out the fire.
The caller insists that
there is a fine levied
against the owner of the
lot for the fire and the
Cuerpo de Bomberos must
be compensate for their
services or the charges
tacked onto their
municipal tax bill and
if unpaid the owner
could end up losing the
lot.
Esteban Ramos, chief of
the Cuerpo de Bomberos,
is advising all
residents that the fire
department never charges
for their services and
that there is no fine or
cost to put out a fire.
Ramos did not specify
the amount of the fine
or costs the scamsters
are seeking.
