Security Tight in
Guatemalan Transport
The recently created
police nucleus to
tighten security in
buses began working in
terminals, bus stops and
in units of Guatemalan
public transport, in
order to fight crime and
to protect workers and
users.
According to PNC
(National Civil Police)
Director Henry Lopez,
during the first hours
the capture of more than
a ten of people was
obtained and a gun AK 47
with its respective
ammunition was seized.
Lopez reported that
several cases of attacks
against drivers and bus
assistants were
individualized, in which
individuals shut in
prisons and members of
youthful gangs are
included.
In order to create this
new force, the 10
percent of agents of PNC
in the departments of
Solota, Baja Verapaz,
Totonicapan and El
Progreso was retired and
concentrated in this
capital.
Citizens interviewed by
media expressed their
approval with security
tightened increase in
transport services and
their hope that violence
stops.
On the other hand,
former presidential
candidates Otto Perez
Molina and Alejandro
Giammattei sent notes to
President Alvaro Colom
requesting to restore
capital punishment like
a dissuasive measure to
