5 Trapped In Colombian
Gold Mine Accident,
Rescue Underway
Bogota - Operation
continued Monday to
rescue five miners who
were trapped alive when
a gold mine caved in
Sunday night in the
northwestern Antioquia
province.
Chief of the
Administrative Office of
Disasters Attention and
Prevention, John Rendon,
told the press Monday
that the rescuers had
worked all Sunday night
in the San Antonio gold
mine outside the town of
Zaragoza, and are
waiting for the experts'
assistance.
"There are about five
people trapped in the
mine, whom we do believe
are still alive," Rendon
said.
Zaragoza Mayor Victor
Perlaza told the press
that the rescuers have
communicated with the
miners and are trying to
feed them with tubes.
Rendon said a landslide
was thought to have
triggered the cave-in.
Mine accidents are
frequent in Colombia
where many mine owners
dodged the legal
requirements for mining,
and miners are deprived
of adequate security and
protection measures.
