ELN Blamed For Killing 5
People in Colombia
Bogota - The Colombian
police Friday said
suspected members of the
Ejército de Liberación
Nacional (ELN) - Army of
National Liberation -
killed five people.
The murder occurred
Thursday in a rural area
of Arauca province,
where allegedly ELN
members intercepted a
vehicle and shot at
people aboard, said Luis
Ortiz, police commander
from the province.
"We accuse ELN members
of this murder, since
one of the dead was a
former member of this
group...and we are
investigating to find
out the true motives of
this massacre," Ortiz
said.
According to the
authorities, the victims
were a former ELN
member, his two sons,
his son-in-law and a
girl. Two women were
also injured.
The 4,500-strong ELN is
Colombia's second
biggest anti-government
group behind the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia.
The country has been
locked in a four-decade
civil war among
government forces,
leftist guerrillas and
far-right
paramilitaries, and more
than 3,000 people were
killed every year in
this longest conflict in
Latin America.
