Russia, Nicaragua Boost
Relations
Moscow - Russia and
Nicaragua have agreed on
Thursday on tightening
political relations and
bilateral cooperation,
on the first day of an
official visit by
Nicaraguan President
Daniel Ortega to Moscow.
Ortega was welcomed by
Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev early today,
before both leaders held
official talks in the
Grand Kremlin Palace´s
Green Parlor.
On his first visit to
Moscow after taking
office in Jan. 2006, the
Sandinista leader
highlighted Russia´s
renewed interest in the
Latin American region.
New conditions are being
created in Latin
America, and within that
context, the Russian
presence in the
continent is welcomed,
Ortega said.
He also referred to the
recently-concluded
regional summit held in
Brazil, and stressed
that "Latin America is
not longer the backyard
of any power".
We are building our own
path, and multipolarity
is a fact, in spite of
those advocating for a
unipolar world, he
stressed.
In this context, Ortega
voiced Nicaragua´s will
to develop constructive
relations with Russia.
Medvedev and Ortega
agreed on developing
bilateral cooperation in
trade, economy and
scientific, technical
and humanitarian fields.
Both leader signed a
joint statement at the
end of their private
meeting.
Russia and Nicaragua
established diplomatic
relations 60 years ago.
Links were at the
highest level between
1979-1990, during the
first Sandinista
government in Nicaragua. |
