Guatemala Nixes Raids on
Migrants in US
Guatemala - The National
Council for Attention to
the Guatemalan Migrant (CONAMIGUA)
condemned Friday the
raids against illegal
Guatemalan people in the
US, from where more than
26,600 Guatemalans were
expelled this year.
CONAMIGUA particularly
rejected the recent
capture of 11 Guatemalan
citizens in a chicken
processing plant in the
US state of Georgia.
The illegal people were
arrested eight days ago
but shortly later, four
women were released and
the seven men remained
in an arrest center
until they are deported
to Guatemala.
The Council demanded
respect to the dignity
and human rights of the
arrested people, and
expressed their
solidarity with affected
families.
The anti-migrant policy
in the US started to
worsen in 2005, due to
the decision of the
White House to punish
illegal people and build
a wall in the border
with Mexico, to stop
illegal people from
entering to the US
national territory.
Since then, the number
of repatriates has
noticeably grown.
According to data
supplied by the
Migration General
Direction, there were
23,063 Guatemalan people
expelled from the US
national territory in
2007, and now the number
has increased to 26,631
people this year.
Besides the separation
of many families,
deportation has provoked
a reduction of the
family remittances,
something of which a
third of the 13 million
Guatemalan inhabitants
is living.
