Brazilian Men Sign To
Support Eradication Of
Violence Against Women

than 32,000 Brazilian
men have signed their
names as of Saturday to
support a campaign aimed
at ending violence
against women, according
to local media reports.
"Today is the day of
mobilization of men to
put an end to violence
against women and we are
happy to see so many men
taking part in this
movement", said Benedict
Medrado, who launched
the signature movement
as part of the global
campaign "United to End
Violence Against Women."
"When we talk about
gender, we are talking
about inequality within
a context of sexist
basis, which affects not
only women but also men
themselves," noted
Medrado.
"Culturally, there is a
disengagement of the men
taking care of others.
When someone falls ill
or is born into a
family, it's the woman
who is caring, never the
man. We want to show
that man can take
another place on this
issue," he said.
For a change of thought,
Medrado said, several
aspects need to be
addressed.
"Education is one of the
fronts, but not
exclusively. Another way
is the adoption of
tougher measures,
punishment of violence
against women." he
added.
According to the World
Health Organization,
almost half of the women
murdered worldwide are
victims of their husband
or boyfriend, either
current or former. In
some countries, up to 69
percent of women report
having been physically
assaulted and 47 percent
said that their first
sexual intercourse was
forced.
