Guatemala Newspaper CEO
Abducted
GUATEMALA - The
President of Guatemalan
newspaper El Periodico
Raul Zamora was
kidnapped in this
capital, beaten and
forced to consume toxic
substances, sources
reported here Friday.
The journalist was in
the hands of his captors
for over 10 hours.
Zamora was discovered
unconscious outside
Chimaltenango, 31 miles
east of the capital, and
taken to a health center
for first aid.
Authorities are
investigating to
determine whether the
attack was aimed at
robbery or linked with
the news activities of
the victim.
The president of "El
Periodico" and his
family left the country
for several years after
an armed group went into
his house in 2003 and
subjected him to
humiliation and death
threats.
Many attacks against
journalists in Guatemala
have been reported this
year, including the
murder of Jorge Merida,
correspondent of Prensa
Libre in Coatepeque. |
