Panamanians to Protest
against High Cost of
Living
PANAMA - Panamanian
trade union, students,
farmers and guild
organizations announced
the resumption of
protests against the
high cost of living and
in demand of a wage
rise.
The demonstrations are
organized by the
Coordinator to Struggle
for the Defense of the
People's Life and
Dignity, which groups
those forces to prepare
a nationwide strike
whose date has not been
set yet.
The National Front for
the Defense of Economic
and Social Rights (FREANDESO)
said in a communiqué
that the protests would
consist of street
meetings, distribution
of leaflets, seminars,
meetings and other
propaganda activities.
The organizations
grouped in the
Coordinator are
preparing a nationwide
march for August 14 in
major sites in the
capital and in the
cities of Veraguas and
David, in central and
western Panama,
respectively.
The organizers of the
protests presented a
25-item list of demands
that include better
public health and
education, attention to
retired people and
environmental measures,
