ICE Will Offer
Blackberry Next Month
For lovers of high tech
cellular phones, the
Instituto Costarricense
de Electricidad (ICE)
has good news - it will
begin selling the
Blackberry Pearl 8120
and Curve 8320 beginning
next month.
The news came from
Adolfo Arias, director
de la División de
Servicios de
Telecomunicaciones del
ICE, who along with
Julio Palavicini, have
been testing the models
for use in Costa Rica.,
For those who are not
familiar with the
Blackberry, it is known
as a smart phone, with
ability to make more
than a phone call, but
also deliver many other
multimedia functions
like push Email - a
system that provide an
"always-on" capability,
in which new e-mail is
instantly and actively
transferred (pushed) as
it arrives.
The service is special
and comes at an extra
cost over and above the
basic ICE rares for
cellular and internet
service.
The Blackberry will be
sold by ICE as part of a
package deal that will
start around ˘350.000
colones and will be
marketed mainly to
executives who are need
of being in constant
touch.
To obtain a Blackberry
that will work with the
ICE network, the
customer has to already
be a GSM subscriber and
ask for a change of
equipment. For those
with TDMA lines they
will have to wait until
ICE brings in the new 3G
service next year.
Although the
introduction of the
service has been delayed
already on several
occasions, Palavicini
says that it is now a
reality.
In the Central Valley,
the Blackberry will only
be available at most ICE
agencies.
With the introduction of
the Blackberry, this
will be the first time
ICE offers a cellular
line and equipment and
is in preparation of the
coming competition now
that the opening of the
telecommunications
market - breaking the
ICE monopoly - has been
approved and passed in
Congress.
In addition to the
Blackberry, rumours are
that ICE is negotiation
for the Apple iPhone.
