Collapsed Bridge Cuts
Off Travel To And From
Guanacaste
Passage between
Puntarenas and
Guanacaste has been
completed blocked
following the collapse
of the bridge over the
Guacimal river at
kilometre 145 of the
Interamericana norte.
The bridge is not
expected to be re-opened
until Tuesday.
The ministra de Obras
Públicas y Transportes,
Karla González,
explained "A support in
the right truss snapped
and this caused the slab
to overturn".
The bridge has a 35
centimetre (14 inch) gap
on the Guanacaste side
of the bridge, while a
10 centimere (4 inch)
collapse on the opposite
end.
The collapse occurred
around 9am Saturday,
frustrating drivers on
both sides of the
bridge.
According to William
Álvarez, inspector del
Servicio Vial del
Consejo Nacional de
Vialidad (Conavi),
passage on the bridge is
impossible, as the
bridge supports are
damaged.
The bridge cuts off all
transportation on the
Interamericana to and
from Guanacaste.
Alternate routes are by
either ferry crossing at
Paquera and Playa
Naranjo to Nicoya or the
route through Cañas,
Tilarán and La Fortuna.
Travelling to and from
San José and Guanacaste
will mean a detour
through Zarcero or San
Ramón to La Fortuna or
San Carlos, around the
Arenal volcano, through
Neuvo Arenal, to Tilarán
and Cañas. An
alternative route is
through Upala that
connects with La Cruz
from San Carlos.
