New Variety of Marijuana
Discovered in The
Talamanca Mountains
Costa Rican authorities
said yesterday they
discovered a new variety
of marijuana that grows
in weeks and does not
have a stronger odor
than traditional
marijuana.
The discovery came
following weeks of
investigations by police
officials of the
Ministerio de Seguridad
Pública and the
Dirección de
Inteligencia y Seguridad
(DIS) who took to the
Talamanca mountains.
Authorities say the
unusual crop find
appears to be an import
from colombia.
"It is smaller and
clearer than traditional
leaves, we knew of a
similar variety present
in other countries, but
this is the first time
it is found in Costa
Rica", explained José
Torres, viceministro de
Seguridad Pública.
The police operation
destroyed some 200.000
marijuana plants in a
total of 14 plantations.
Authorities also
detained an indigenous
of the area, a woman
identified by her last
name, Moya Moya, who was
surprised by the police
presence in the region
and armed with a .22
calibre rifle and had
with her 8 kilograms of
the marijuana and 10
kilograms of seeds.
To date police has
uprooted 53 marijuana
plantations and
destroyed some 1.7
million plants.
