Spanish Court Rejects
Argentina's Extradition
Request For Ex-President
A Spanish court said
Monday that it would
reject Argentinina's
request to extradite its
former President Isabel
Peron.
Argentine authorities
have issued two
extradition requests
against Peron, 77, for
alleged human rights
violations.
The Spanish National
Court ruled that Peron,
who moved to Spain in
1981, could not be
extradited because the
accusations against her
could not be termed
crimes against humanity
and there was no
sufficient evidence of
her involvement in the
accused crimes.
Argentinina's federal
judge Raul Acosta wanted
Peron for questioning
over the disappearance
of two young people in
February1976. The judge
accused her of approving
three bills in 1975,
authorizing the military
to use force, which
resulted in the
abduction and
disappearance of the
young people.
Peron's lawyers have
argued that she should
not be extradited
because she is now a
Spanish citizen and is
of advanced age and is
in poor health
conditions.
Isabel Peron, whose full
name is Maria Estela
Martinez de Peron,
became president in 1974
following the death of
her husband President
Juan Peron. She was
overthrown in a military
coup on March 24, 1976.
