Guatemala May Day for
Wages
Rejection of the high
cost of living,
insecurity, and low
wages will center
Guatemalan
demonstrations on May
Day, their organizers
informed.
According to union
leaders, products highly
consumed like bread,
beans, rice, and corn
have become more
expensive in the last
month, due to the lack
of basic grains
resulting from their use
to produce biofuels.
The country has also
being affected by the
crisis in oil prices and
the US economic
recession.
Amid this situation, the
Central Trade Union of
Guatemalan Workers
called for the
population to put black
strips in front of their
houses on May Day as a
sign of protest over the
rise in the prices of
basic products, and food
insecurity.
That day, Guatemalans
will also protest low
wages, and high levels
of unemployment, which
maintains 70 percent of
the economically active
population in the
informal sector.
In addition, they will
condemn the violent
climate in the country,
where 12-15 deaths are
reported each day. |
