Seeks Help From
Venezuela For Hostage
Release
U.S. former UN
ambassador Bill
Richardson met with
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez Saturday to
seek help for the
release of three U.S.
hostages held by
Colombia's largest rebel
group.
The three U.S. defence
contractors have been
held hostage by the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC)
since 2003.
"I've had a good meeting
with President Chavez,"
said Richardson, and
Chavez "has told me that
he is willing to help in
this situation."
However, in televised
comments earlier in the
day, Chavez said, "I do
not know if I can
continue helping on this
issue."
Richardson arrived in
Caracas Friday night at
the request of the
hostages' families. He
had helped negotiate the
release of Americans in
Iraq and North Korea in
1996, and of a U.S.
journalist in Sudan in
2006.
Richardson is the
governor of the U.S.
state of New Mexico.
