Price Increases Due
Tomorrow, Gasoline on
Tuesday
A wave of increase in
consumer goods and
services is around the
corner and many Costa
Ricans have to become
creative in stretching
their earnings and may
have to settle to worker
harder and longer hours.
Come tomorrow
electricity, bus fares
and taxis will all be
more expensive. On
Tuesday, gasoline prices
hit the pocket book.
The round of increases
was to have occurred
last Friday, Saturday
for gasoline, however
the publication of the
approval by the
Autoridad Reguladora de
Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
was delayed until
Monday.
Before any approved
Aresep price increases
can take effect they
need to be published in
the official government
publication, La Gaceta.
In the case of gasoline
prices, the increase or
reduction takes effect
the day following the
publication.
La Gaceta publishes
Monday to Friday, except
holidays, like May 1,
Mothers Day (August 15)
and September 15 if they
fall during the week.
As to electricity rates
the increase will range
from 11% to 41%,
depending on the monthly
consumption. Bus fares
jump from ¢15 to ¢280
colones, depending on
the route. And taxi
meters will charge ¢420
instead of ¢405 colones
for the first kilometre,
the additional mileage
stays the same.
Gasoline prices take a
whopping jump come
Tuesday as a litre of
super gasoline will cost
¢36 colones more,
bringing the price at
the pump to ¢601;
regular jumps to ¢588
coloens, and consumer of
diesel taking the
biggest hit with an
increase of ¢45 colones
per litre.
