Colombian Navy Destroys
Five Cocaine Labs
Colombia's Navy reported
Monday it destroyed five
labs used to process
cocaine on the
Colombia's border with
Ecuador, and arrested at
least two former
paramilitaries guarding
the location.
"Troops from the Navy
Number 70 Fluvial
Infantry Battalion gave
a hard blow to Los
Rastrojos criminal gang,
arresting two of its
members, including one
nicknamed 'Neneco,' and
destroying five of its
production labs,"
Colombia's Navy stated
in a communique.
The arrestees are also
former members of
Colombia's United
Self-Defense (AUC) in
the western Narino
border province.
The AUC was disarmed on
April of 2006 but its
ultra right-wing
commanders gathered
troops and continued
their illegal
activities, including
illicit drug trafficking
in the Colombian
regions.
The Colombian Navy
reported that during
this attack it
confiscated weapons,
communication equipment,
paste to produce
cocaine, coca leaves,
gasoline and other
substances.
Colombia and Ecuador
have been locked in a
diplomatic crisis since
Colombia violated
Ecuador's sovereignty on
March 1 during a
military incursion into
its territory against a
base belonging to the
Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC).
